Within 48 hours of laying a foot on san francisco’s ground, I had a job. Union square, the center of sf downtown, is also known by many as kikar zion. Around it is a 6 story macy’s store, 5 floor victoria’s secret store, 6 levels of saks fifth ave, louis viton store; all the rest are israeli arts and jewelry stores. there are about 15 of them in the central 9 blocks. the jews are here.


I sell charms. Where? At world of the charms, where else? We have thousands of them; in different shapes, styles, sizes, forms. sterling silver. yellow gold. white gold. 14k. 18k. diamonds. I became a jewelry guru. like all of the jews here. hmm jew… jewelry. coincidence?

San Francisco is not what I imagined it being - it’s much more. liberal, colorful, beautiful, rich. It’s difficult to describe but I’ll give it a try:
As I walk across spacious and beautiful union square, inhaling cool nourishing fresh air, the soft easy sun warms my face. i stop to take a picture of the peaceful scene around me, smile back to the cute well dressed couple sitting near me, hear the black man on the cable car ringing the bell on its way up powell street, and listen to the young musician playing his tune at the corner. I sit in a sunny spot, between by an elder man in a suit who is reading a book and a Japanese couple who are drinking tea. my laptop connects to the free wifi around me, and I am again one with the world wide web. But only this time I have one of the best seats in the house.

The mix of people here in the city is like a long island ice tea. vodka, gin, triple sec and rum – various types from various origins, splash of sweet & sour – as the energies flowing throughout the city, fill up with cranberry juice – makes things look fun and attractive, a splash of 7up – for the fizz and excitement, and don’t forget to garnish with a lemon. When you’re through with the drink, you realize that things are starting to look a little different. your senses have been played with.

the urban rush is balanced out with the beautiful nature surrounding and within the city limits. i try to spend my free time under the hugging sun in calming parks near home or relaxing isolated natural spots by the sea side.

when moses freed the jewish people from slavery thousands of years ago, he forgot those that were working in sales at the malls. oi vey, i stood at that kiosk open to close. every day.

we had the best non-electronic goods to offer. Aromatherapy pillows, hair stylers, cosmetics and healthcare from “the dead sea of Israel, my country”.

did i get rich?

no.

i learned a sentence in spanish; mucho travecho, pokito deniro. lots of work, little money. i made about $2,000 in 3-4 weeks. when you divide that to the hours i put in… i was better off applying as a cook at mcdonalds.

apparntly, things don’t always work out the way you want them to.

it was time to get out of the mall and see the world!! or at least see reno and lake tahoe.

lake tahoe is surrounded by some of the best ski resorts in california. the concept is that while you are tumbling down the mountain in your ski suit, forming a large and larger snowball around you, the last view you’ll see before being hospitalized for a few weeks will be gorgeous!
